About BrainStorm Therapeutics

CNS drug discovery needs a paradigm shift

Widely used preclinical models underperform at predicting drug efficacy and safety, and the late introduction of human biology in the R&D process leads to high failure and cost.

Why current CNS drug discovery fails

  • Lack of animal and cell culture models that accurately predict human efficacy.
  • Underlying heterogeneity of disease processes arising from a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors.
  • It is unlikely that a single drug engaging one target will be effective for substantial segments of the patient population.
  • Limited understanding of the impact of target biology on the complex network of intracellular and intercellular disease processes.

Patient-derived brain organoids are a powerful platform for CNS drug discovery

“Human-first” patient-derived brain organoid platform bridging the translational valley of death.

Our proprietary platform leverages human patient iPSC-derived models of brain disease and the computational tools of deep learning and network medicine to identify therapeutic candidates that halt, prevent, or reverse synaptic network dysfunction and neurodegeneration.

Brain organoids

Living, self-organized 3D structures derived from human iPSCs that mimic human brain tissue and exhibit highly synchronized and spontaneous synaptic network activity.

Biomarker-based screening endpoints

Capture robust and reproducible, clinically translatable disease phenotypes that are amenable to multiple screening applications and high-content imaging.

De-risking clinical translation

Accelerate the generation of human efficacy and safety data early in the R&D process, resulting in safer and more effective clinical candidates.

FDA Modernization Act 2.0

Recognizes that human brain organoids provide a more accurate and reliable evaluation of drug efficacy and safety, reducing the reliance on animal work.

Currently focused on drug discovery for Parkinson’s disease

Human PD patient-derived midbrain organoids recapitulate key elements of PD pathophysiology, including dopamine neuron degeneration and synaptic dysfunction.

Portrait of Dr. Robert Fremeau, founder and CEO of BrainStorm Therapeutics

From our founder

“The brain is the last frontier in modern biology.”

Dr. Robert Fremeau founded BrainStorm Therapeutics to discover and develop breakthrough medicines to transform the lives of the millions of patients suffering from devastating neurological disorders.

Before BrainStorm, he was Chief Scientific Officer at Vyant Bio, where his team discovered repurposing candidates for Rett syndrome that are advancing to a Phase 2 clinical trial funded by the Department of Defense. He was previously a Scientific Director in neuroscience at Amgen and a faculty member at Duke University and UCSF.
